As a result of the draconian measures The City of Edinburgh Council employed
to extract a disputed £8,000 Poll Tax debt
from me, a retrospective exhibition of my work was 'arrested' by Sheriff's
Officers. After I paid a total of over £18,000 to
the Council I was allowed to recover my work. All of the hand-printed, selenium
toned photographs were ruined due to the
manner in which they had been handled and stored. The Council refused to pay
any compensation, so I burned the final showing.
Sadly it didn't end there - the loss of revenue from what was to be a touring
exhibition, added to the consequential costs of a
remortgage, added to the value of the lost work means the Council have cost
me in the region of £70,000. This for a disputed debt.
I think the lesson here is clear: Play by their rules...You lose.
It was fun burning the pictures though.
