An Eye For Music -
£20,000 Up In Flames
As an exhibition An Eye For Music has had an exciting history.
From its critically acclaimed premiere in Glasgow's Royal Concert
Hall in 2000, to being placed under arrest by sheriff's officers,
acting on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council. Some were
busted out on special licence to go Aberdeen and Inverness.
They all then languished in the cold, damp cellar of the
sheriff's officers' store in Stirling for nearly 2 years.
On their return, it was found that several frames were broken
and many of the prints were damp-damaged beyond repair.
Further evidence has emerged in the months since their return,
to suggest that all the pictures have been fatally compromised
and the length of their future life cannot be guaranteed, even
for a few months.
The Queen's Hall showing will therefore be the last time that
this collection of photographs is exhibited. Rather than let
it slowly disintegrate in a dark back corner of the studio,
photographer marc marnie has decided to end its life in one
final dramatic event.
On Tue 9 April, the entire exhibition of 57 prints will be
consumed in a wall of flames in a final valediction.
A small audience will be invited to witness the destruction
of £20,000 worth of photographs representing 25 years of work.
The burning will take place outdoors, attendance by invitation only.
"These pictures represent some of the musicians who have meant
most to me in my life, the ones who give me a bright burning
sensation inside every time I hear them perform. Many of them
lived their lives on the edge, and many of them are sadly no
longer with us. So it seems appropriate that their final
appearance in these photographs will be consumed in fire,
rather than in a slow fade-out". - marc marnie
